What’s Community Night?
Are you looking to try archery, but can't do it during practice hours? Well now there's an opportunity for everyone who wants in on some action!
Join us this month at our Monthly Social event - Community Night. We'll provide all equipment, just show up with your friends ready-to go!
Every first Friday of the month, we gather together at the Arena to shoot arrows and meet new friends. It doesn’t matter if you’ve picked up a bow before, or even played here before - it’s great for beginners to try out!
This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to try out their skills with archery or just want an excuse hangout on Fridays since classes are always cancelled anyways (ya know those lockdown days?)
The game is an excellent way for people who are interested in fitness to get their fix. It’s fun, it’s easy to pick up, and exercising without realising it by running, dodging, and shooting like Robin Hood.
There are digital targets to shoot at in the range as well! You and up to 6 of your friends can play together - with everyone for themselves by seeing how accurate you are, playing speed rounds (or both!)
Personal scores and stats can be generated and if you compare yourself across the different session, you’ll be able to measure your progress and improvement! Plus if one person has been playing longer than another maybe he knows some secrets that might give him an edge?
It’s a great way to improve before going up against our regulars, but what’s the fun in that? Community Night lets you dive straight into the deep end and lets you feel like a true archer while still having some laughs!
Come join the regulars and play with our coaches at 7pm! Hopefully we can get up and running again with the next session starting in February the 4th, if the lockdown ends…
18 Benefits of Playing Combat Archery Tag at Archers Arena!
Archery is widely known as being a therapeutic sport because of its calm, focused nature. However, combat archery tag (or archery dodgeball) is a much more active version of archery, which still encompases many of the same benefits, along with a few more of its own. The following are just some of the perks or skills you get out of playing combat archery tag here at Archers Arena.
1. Exercise
Combat archery tag is known as a workout; you will be leaving sweaty and satisfied.
2. Upper Body Strength
The constant, repetitive motions of drawing and firing a bow activates the major core muscle groups in the upper body.
3. Agility
Your reflexes and quick moves will be put to the test while playing archery dodgeball, allowing for constant improvement.
4. Instincts
At Archers Arena we encourage instinctive archery, which means less thinking and more feeling for more accurate results. Having a clear mind really does improve and sharpen your skills.
5. Balance
To successfully hit stationary targets, stillness is key, therefore control of your body is essential, and that develops one's balance.
6. Hand-Eye Coordination
Not only does it improve by shooting, it also improves with catching oncoming arrows.
7. Mental Focus
This is a big one. You have to both focus on hitting your target, while also keeping track of everything else going on in the game.
8. Analytical Skills
Because there is so much going on during a game, players eventually pick up prioritizing certain plays or tactics to either gain the advantage or survive an onslaught.
9. Teamwork/Communication
Lone wolves don't survive in the arena, no matter their potential. Working as a team always brings the best results as one player may see something others don't. Communicating is key to adapting to given circumstances.
10. Patience
The key to winning in archery dodgeball is patience, along with timing. Mastering archery takes time and requires a certain softness, kind of like a bow itself.
11. Confidence
Another big one. Seeing yourself improve and your shots landing is always a great way to boost both your self-esteem and your confidence, along with our encouraging coaches.
12. Community
We at Archers Arena are building a community of players that simply love the sport, and we all support and push each other to get better. There is nothing but love here, and it really shines through.
13. Safety
We provide arm guards and helmets, as well as a training which shows you how to handle our equipment safely and effectively.
14. Stress-Relief
No better way to let off steam than by shooting other people and they still get to walk away unscathed.
15. Two Outlooks
Combat archery tag can be conducted both in and outdoors.
16. It's Fun for Everyone
Kids and adults alike always enjoy their experience with us, and who can blame them? Archery is already badass, and now you get to make an hero out of yourself on our courts.
17. New Sport
Combat archery tag is a relatively newly developed sport, meaning that there are still various techniques and tactics waiting to be discovered to enhance the game.
18. Easy to Learn
Literally anyone can pick up combat archery tag if they truly desire to. We provide in depth training to ensure every new person starts on the same level as everyone else, personal predispositions notwithstanding.
These are just a few of the reasons why both Archers Arena and combat archery tag have become such popular attractions for the people of Toronto, although archery dodgeball itself is making it's way worldwide. It really is a choice that you simply can't go wrong with because it appeals to everyone on different levels. Whether it's from the excitement of being a bow-wielding warrior to even just being a competitive person who enjoys pushing their own limits, there really is no bad reason to want to play the game.
March 26th Tournament, With a Twist!
On the 5th of February, Archers Arena hosted the 1st ever Eastern Canadian combat archery tag tournament. This article tells you all you need to know about how the event went down. Therefore, you know that walking away, our teams were a little disappointed, yet filled with the desire to win when the next tournament opportunity arises.
We have been dedicating every past Tuesday (Coach Nights) and Thursday (Training Nights) working at fine-tuning skills that push our limits and allow us to grow as better players. The loss to the Montreal team has only added fuel to the fire, and it’s with renewed, burning motivation that we will be taking on our next combat archery tag tournament, on the 26th of March.
Here is the twist! We are disbanding all our veteran teams to introduce mixed teams of old and new players. Stronger players are now separated instead of all playing together, allowing this tournament’s victor to really be in a position to fight for the title. With the right strategy, a whole team of less experienced players may create an upset and get away with the victory! You can believe however that everyone is training and aiming at bringing their best, so if you are interested in trying it out, I would highly recommend you set aside some time to come practice your aim, your catches, and your team if you have one. What happens if you don’t? Talk to one of our coaches and we will get you in on the action!
What makes this tournament so different and exciting is that we really don’t know who is going to come out on top since there is a varied and contrasting pool of talent in every team signed up so far. Literally everyone has a chance at winning, and victory will rely mostly on effective teamwork and communication.
The challenge has been issued! Any and all who want to have a try at competitive combat archery tag, otherwise known as archery dodgeball, may come out and give it a try. Make sure you sign your team up ahead of time online, or give us a call and we’ll make sure you have a spot reserved.
See you soon!
Intense Training at Archers Arena Thursday Nights!
We are now introducing a new evening where you can interact and evolve alongside coaches and members, as well as other fellow players who want to improve. You may already be familiar with our regular Coach nights, every Tuesday evenings, but you may not have heard yet of Thursdays being our combat archery tag training nights. None other than our own Jones Santiago is behind the idea, and he has been working hard to provide the ideal drills and necessary exercises to create a solid archery dodgeball player.
The idea behind the whole process is not only to help players hone their skills, but also to get healthier and fitter by going through 3 separate segments of training during the evening. With the training running for a little over an hour, we are subject to a cardio warm-up, body-weight workout, and drills. The warm-up is simple enough, it’s to get your body ready to work through cardio. The workout aims at developing core strength, while the drills focus on your agility. It’s a killer combination to turn you into someone more agile that can keep up with faster-paced gameplay.
Although there is a strong physical component to Jones’ training, there is also an archery component incorporated. During the whole session, you must keep your bow at your side, and use it throughout. Within the drills, there are multiple arrow reloading and shooting scenarios, which have you aiming at targets near and far, all in the interest of developing your instincts and furthering your accuracy while under pressure. It teaches you to focus and take control of your nerves before they take control of you.
Another huge part of combat archery tag is teamwork; you’re only as good as your weakest link. Not only communication is vital, but knowing your teammates and how to work together is a huge part of winning the games. Higher level of archery dodgeball requires smart gameplay, and you have to be on your toes as it constantly evolves. That’s why within the drills training, Jones can pair us up in teams to create a competitive environment to put us under more pressure to perform. Getting acquainted not only with your teammates, but also with that pressure, ensures that it doesn’t take you by surprise anymore whilst playing.
The intent in the end is to give you more control over your own body, by becoming faster, stronger and more agile. We want you to be able to move as fast as you think, so you can have an edge over your adversaries. This program will develop numerous facets of your personality, while offering training you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll always have a team there to support you, and push you forward in your development, wherever you want it to go. Come give it a try: you have absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain from just one session.
First Eastern Canadian Tournament. The Results are IN!
For those of you that might have missed all our original posts on the subject, on the 5th of February 2017, Archers Arena has hosted the first eastern Canadian combat archery tag tournament! From far in wide, Toronto has received a team from Ottawa, one from Windsor, two from Montreal, and we had five teams representing us. With intense gameplays fought, ridiculous turnabouts, quick moves and quick thinking, there is only one word we can use to describe this event: epic.
On the eve of the battle, both Ottawa and Montreal teams came to practice at the Arena, leading to the first contact between the various people who were going to play each other the next day. The comradery was frank and forthcoming, although you could tell that no one would go easy on the others the following day. It was great to see so many passionate people that just love the game of archery dodgeball, and who work at bettering themselves all the time.
When the morning came, coffee and breakfast were awaiting all the players, but the hype was already alive and going. The atmosphere was unreal, the anticipation crackled in the air as all awaited to take each other on. The game was on. Bows at the ready, getting the stretches in, focus was all on strategy and gameplay. Friendly banter in the air, with the underlying current of rivalry made it even more intense, yet still fun.
Throughout the morning, the plays were non-stop. Teams were learning how to face each other and strategies had to be changed and adapted to who was playing who. Evaluating the other players and understand how they play combat archery tag, and how to counter them was not an easy task, but it had to be done in order to win the tournament! After the first few rounds that comprised Round Robin style of play, Toronto came out on top with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, while Montreal took 4th and 5th.
However, in a complete change of pace during the finals, Montreal worked together for an epic comeback to win the tournament, and won against the newly reformed team Kyron’s Angels, known previously as Wetshots, which did end up winning our 7th local tournament. As prizes, Montreal Originals ended up going home with six of our beautiful, hand-painted 26 pound bows.
All there is left to say is that it was truly our pleasure to host such great teams from all over. All we can hope for is to have an even broader turnout from more Canadian cities in the next major tournament, which will be hosted sometime during the summer. We will be working out, and standardizing, Canadian rules so we can all train and play in the same frame of mind. Looking forward to the next epic combat archery tag Canadian tournament!
3 Great Reasons to Make Coach Night, Your Night!
As mentioned in previous blogs, Archers Arena has a special evening reserved for higher quality gameplay, where you can come and play with our coaches and members. Nights like these include a number of factors to enhance the original combat archery tag experience you might have previously had. The following are just a few reasons that give Coach Nights a step up from the regular archery experience.
Coaches
One of our best features here at Archers Arena is indeed the staff. Our coaches simply love the game, have a lot of experience, and are a wealth of information and knowledge, not only about the game itself, but also about archery in general. Having one or two coaches on your team for the evening will definitely change the way you will view playing combat archery tag, because we bring leadership, techniques, and strategies. Our aim is to win! (Bonus: we are also very friendly.)
Community Spirit
You will also get to meet our members, who are also very good at playing combat archery tag! We believe that like attracts like, and we are currently building a community of people who genuinely love the sport. I mean what better than being able to shoot arrows at people you value without actually hurting them? There is no downside. Creating bonds and friendships is something that happens naturally within the walls of Archers Arena, and we attract truly great, caring people who have very interesting stories to tell. And what better way to consolidate bonds than through blood, sweat, and tears? Well, minus the blood and the tears, but it’s the thought that counts.
Competitive
This outing is generally by invite, so you know that there won’t be players who can’t take a hit, or don’t know how to play. This isn’t the time to learn, it’s the time to bring to the table what you have. Teams play to win, and the intensity is very high while remaining fun and amicable. It’s really a great atmosphere everyone can strive in and improve. Different, elaborate game modes are put into practice, and incite quality from the plays put forward. There needs to be a good understanding of tactics and teamwork to be considered a good player. It is, after all, a team sport. And there is no “i” in “team”. We might also throw in some beta games to test, and that is a great time to get creative and share the passion we have here for the game.
In summation, we are giving out the opportunity for players to have the same intense game play as a tournament, but on a more regular basis, which allows for constant improvement. You will get to play with people you might be more used to facing, and learn from them to improve your own tactics. Eventually, you might be able to step up to a coach’s level. So come play!
Top 6 Reasons Archers Arena is a Perfect Corporate (and Other) Holiday Event
With the holidays showing up around the corner, businesses generally have an outing with their staff to consolidate workplace relationships. There are always multiple options as to where to go, and what offers the best kind of experience. Here is a comprehensive list of reasons why you should consider Archers Arena as a top contender in your choices.
1. Great Team Building
Combat archery is a great option for team building simply because you have to work as a team to win a game. Very straightforward, but some of our game modes demand a high level of cooperation that necessitates communication and teamwork. On the flip side, it also allows coworkers to hash out their inside grudges, or to get even with someone by shooting them while still allowing them to walk away uninjured. It really becomes a win-win scenario!
2. Good Exercise
Believe it or not, combat archery remains a very good workout for those who actually give it a try. There’s something about shedding sweat together that just consolidates relationships between people. Perhaps it’s the rush of adrenaline and dopamine which always accompanies a session, or the constant smiles that show up on every face after a great play, but something tangible is created when people play, and it tends to stick around.
3. Affordable and Accommodating
We offer package deals to make sure you can get the best of your experience here with us, which can include the use of our private party room after your session to relax, unwind and restore yourselves. We also have an ongoing deal with Dominoes pizza, which can be delivered warm and delicious right at the end of your time in the arena to satisfy any craving intensive gameplay can create.
4. Awesome Staff
Our staff have always been the center-point of reasons why customers keep coming back to us. We are professional, friendly, and (most importantly) fun. We know how to customize the experience to the different groups’ wants and needs, all to make sure that everyone walks away feeling like they have been part of something special. We love what we do, and we genuinely enjoy sharing our passion for the sport.
5. Fun for Everyone
From athletes to not-so-athletic people, we have received all kinds of personalities here, and have found that the most important factors is to be willing to give it what you have, whatever that might be. Everybody goes through the same training; sure some will get it quickly, others get to have a more personalized training to make sure that everybody is on the same level when they walk onto the courts, and those accommodate different types of players as well, from more aggressive to more casual, there is a place for everyone here.
6. New Sport to Discover
Combat archery is a relatively new sport on the Toronto market, our location having just celebrated its first birthday during the summer. A lot of people have not yet had the chance to experience the awesomeness that is shooting each other with non-lethal arrows. It is indeed a hybrid mix of different sports, including but not limited to paintball and dodgeball. Most people who enjoy intense sports end up loving combat archery and keep coming back for more.
For these reasons and many more, Archers Arena is the place to come to for a successful corporate outing. However, as intense as we can be, safety always comes first. We always provide clean and effective equipment to ensure safety and comfort, and teach you to be the best archer you can be for a first try in an atmosphere that will make you want to come back for more.
Halloween!
As is tradition, once a year, every year, it is socially acceptable to get out our inner child and dress up as anyone we like for a day. We asked ourselves, why should we limit this freedom to one day only? Short answer: we really shouldn’t!
For a whole week, we at Archers Arena encourage you to dress up and come play! From the 24th till the day of Halloween itself, if you come shoot arrows with us all dressed up, we will let you play for free! If your crew comes in dressed up, we will have a small prize for best costume; points awarded for creativity, aesthetics, and archery friendly capabilities.
In the spirit of the festivities, all of our coaches are going to be dressed up for the week, so if your friends feel they are “too cool” for costumes, you can rest assured the rest of us know the importance of letting loose and having fun once and a while. Life is just too short to afford being able to say no to having fun; we’re all in this together. All for one and one for all!
Group Outings for Kids' Camps
Want to make some memories that will stay with your kids for a lifetime? Want to help encourage teamwork and leadership skills? There is no better team activity than Combat Archery!
The Benefits of Combat Archery Outings
Brain Power:
Combat archery encourages working well with a large group (in team games) or spatial awareness and tactical/critical thinking (in free-for-alls). Watch your campers think in new and exciting ways when presented with real, physical challenges with their friends.
Equal Opportunities:
Every player uses a 22-29lbs bow for a casual game in our Arena – this means, unlike paintball for example, there will not be any enthusiasts who bring their own gear and unbalance the playing field. Everyone will play within the same realm of power. A camper that is tall will shoot just as hard as a younger or shorter camper. In fact, the smaller archer will have an advantage being a smaller target! Everyone on the field will be equipped with exactly the same type of bow and shoot the same padded arrows. Even if one child is smaller than the others, it will not stop them from playing just as hard or having just as much fun as their friends.
Add Variety to the Camp Schedule:
Shake up the regular camp routine with a trip to Archer’s Arena! Your camp will stand out from all the rest and you will leave your campers raving to their parents about what a great time they had. Striking out and doing something different is a great way to provide an amazing, fun activity without needing to plan the activity/game yourself (leave that to us!)
Bringing your day camp campers out to Archer’s Arena for a day of combat archery will be one of the best decisions you ever make, for your campers, for your business, and for yourself!
